About East Midlands Airport
East Midlands airport is a very popular holiday airport located in Leicestershire, in the heart of England. The airport serves the major cities of Nottingham, Leicester, Derby, as well as surrounding areas. Sheffield, Leeds, Stoke-on-Trent and Birmingham are all within easy reach thanks to the excellent road system, the airport itself being just a short distance from Junction 23a and 24 of the M1 motorway.
The airport was in fact officially renamed Nottingham East Midlands Airport in 2004, much to the dismay of residents of Leicester and Derby. However, East Midlands Airport continues to be the common name.
East Midlands airport was opened on April 2 1965, built on the site of a disused RAF base. There has been significant expansion over the years, and now more than five million passengers a year travel through the airport. Cargo is an important part of the Airport's business, with DHL having its UK headquarters here.
More than 100 destinations are served, including domestic UK, Europe, Ireland, Egypt, Mexico and the United States. More destinations are being added all the time. Major airlines and travel operators using East Midlands airport include Easyjet, Ryannair, flyThomas Cook,First Choice,and Thomson Fly. Many Charter companies also use the airport with various destinations.
East Midlands Airport has one terminal, which is well served with shops, restaurants and bars, asnd plenty of seating.
